Artist Statement
The act of creation and experimentation in art has allowed me to express my emotions, make connections and empower others. When was art not important in my life? From my Keith Haring sweater I was dressed in as an infant, to studying fine art as my major, I was deeply invested in the creative. I attended University of Oregon and graduated with a bachelors of science in fine art and a minor in women, gender and sexuality studies. Through my time there I moved away from my illustrative style into more conceptual work, trying out every medium offered, painting, metals, ceramics as well as working for the student run arts and culture magazine as a contributor and art editor.
My art tends to focus on ideas of intimacy, identity and female empowerment which are examined through painting, drawing and the occasional sculpture. These concepts are very important to me being an individual, a woman and a person who cares deeply about interpersonal connection.
I continue to make art everyday whether it be for my own practice of fine arts or in graphic design jobs for others. At the university my senior painting teacher would always say, I wish I had made more bad art. This speaks to me because it is the act of creation that is ultimately important not whether a gallery will accept your work. The experimentation leads to learning and growth as an artist and in the end, better art. I hope to never lose that desire to create and grow from it.
